OUR HISTORY
(From the 1923 Harpers Official Golf Guide)
Silver Lake Country Club as we presently know it was re-established as a Club in 1957.  According to “Harper’s Official Golf Guide”, the original Silver Lake Country Club was established in 1918 and featured a Bert Way designed golf course which was not constructed until 1920.  The course was considered the “sportiest in the section” measuring 6415 yards. The original clubhouse was on the south shore of Crystal Lake.  Holes 1 and 2 went north around the east side of Crystal Lake, holes 3 through 16 where situated where our current golf course is, and holes 17 and 18 returned to the clubhouse around the west side of Crystal Lake.
(The Original Silver Lake Country Club Clubhouse)

The clubs first  teaching professional was Arthur Smith who is most noted for winning the 1905 Western Open (which was considered a  Major Championship at the time). He also is credited with multiple Ohio Open victories as well as winning the Western PA Open twice.  Smith also finished 9th in the 1914 US Open and 10th in the 1905 US Open.  He played in 5 US Opens finishing in the Top 30 in all 5.
Silver Lake remained an active club until at least 1929.  World War II is credited with the eventual closing of the Club and abandonment of the original golf course.
In 1958, an up and coming design team of Larry Packard & Brent Wadsworth were awarded the contract to layout and construct the current Silver Lake Country Club golf course.  Silver Lake Country Club was one of if not the earliest, of the team’s 18 hole designs.
Larry Packard went on to become one of the most prolific Golf Course Architects in the world designing over 250 courses.  He is credited with being the first to design free-form (non-rectangular) tee boxes and his signature hole the “Double Dog-Leg” is ever present in all of his designs especially his most famous, The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook a regular stop on  the PGA Tour.  Larry Packard passed away at the age of 101 in January of 2014.  He is one of only four individuals who have been awarded the ASGCA Distinguished Service Award.
Packard and Wadsworth spent a week exploring and surveying the land to determine whether a course could be constructed to fit on the 120 acres available. Previous architects had turned down the project as not feasible; however, these two gentlemen submitted their findings and were selected to proceed with their final plan.
Brent Wadsworth, then 29, was a graduate of Penn State’s agronomy program. He was married to Jean and had two children under the age of three.
While seeking out a construction crew to build the course, Mr. Wadsworth moved his family into the small house that remained on the property. (This is now the site of the current practice range.) He worked very closely with The Frank Lucco Company during the entire process and construction finally began in June of 1958. Nine holes opened for play on June 20, 1959, using our present second hole as the No. 1 hole. The small house that the Wadsworth family was living in was converted into a temporary clubhouse. Golfers were then shuttled to the first tee on the top of the hill.
Thus was the beginning of the Wadsworth Golf Course Construction Company, which grew from its birth at Silver Lake Country Club in 1958 into the largest golf course construction company in the world. They have completed nearly 700 golf courses.  They have built courses in 46 states, as well as courses in Japan, Mexico, the Philippines and Guam. They have rebuilt, renovated and remodeled a number of well-known courses such as Pinehurst, The Greenbrier, Harbour Town and the Amen Corner at Augusta National. Mr. Wadsworth was the recipient of the Donald Ross Award presented by the American Golf Course Architects Association. He is the only builder that has been honored with this award that is primarily presented to architects.
Over the years, SLCC Members, Emmett and Alice Monroe have kept in touch with the Wadsworths. Mr. Wadsworth informed the Monroes that he and his wife would be passing through Ohio on their way to Pinehurst and would love to see his first course. On September 21, 2003, Mr. and Mrs. Wadsworth came back to the Club that started it all. It was arranged for them to be given a cart tour of the golf course. The Monroes reported that both Mr. and Mrs. Wadsworth were so excited, thrilled and proud of what Silver Lake Country Club has become. Mr. Wadsworth was so impressed to see how the course has matured that he was close to tears. In a letter to the Monroes, Mr. Wadsworth wrote, “The tour of the golf course just plain took our breath away. Jean and I consistently talk about how lucky we were to start our business at Silver Lake with so many good people.”
Silver Lake Country Club is truly blessed with such a wonderful history and is truly a “historic” course being one of Larry Packard’s earliest designs as well as the birthplace of the Wadsworth Golf Course Construction Company.

GENERAL

Members are responsible for having knowledge of as well as adhering to Club rules and policies and ensuring that their Guests do the same. We are a Soft Spikes only club.  FIVESOMES will be permitted on any day at the discretion/approval of the Professional Staff. All FIVESOMES must adhere to the pace of play guidelines set forth by the club.

To speed play, any group regardless of size must invite the following group to "play through" if there is an open hole ahead.  Slow players must permit faster players to play through.  Rounds should take no more than 4 hours to complete.  It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that their group does not fall behind.  Members of the Silver Lake Staff have full authority to take corrective action if a group falls behind (including asking a group to skip a hole in order to regain position).

CELLULAR PHONES

Cellular phones are to be turned to silent while on club property. Cellular phone use in the clubhouse should be restricted to common areas.  Please use common courtesy in using cellular phones in the clubhouse and on the golf course.  Pace of Play shall not be hindered by the use of a cellular telephone.

GOLF DRESS CODE

Hats must be worn with the bill facing forward at all times. Proper attire for Female Golfers includes slacks, appropriate length golf skirts and shorts, and appropriate golf shirts. Hats must be worn with the bill facing forward at all times.

Specifically prohibited for males and females are cargo shorts*, cut-off shorts, camouflage, halter tops, tank tops, swimwear, overly revealing clothing, jeans and denim clothing, t-shirts with logos or other printing, sweatshirts/hoodies, sweatpants, athletic wear, yoga/workout pants and jogging attire.

*Cargo shorts differ from permitted attire as follows: “cargo shorts” consist of a garment with 4 or more pockets, and/or pockets that are stitched to the outside of the fabric.  They are distinctive because the pockets are accompanied by an overlying flap.

Appropriate footwear for males and females includes soft-spike golf shoes, spikeless golf shoes or smooth-soled athletic shoes. Any footwear that may damage the golf course will not be permitted. Members and Guests are encouraged to use the locker rooms to change clothing and shoes.

THE GROUPS AT SILVER LAKE

One of the great traditions at Silver Lake Country Club is our “Group Play”.  Group Play was designed so that Members would need not bother themselves with  the pains of organizing a game or foursome.  Instead, tee times are set aside for our various Groups on weekends as well as a few weekdays.  Members may sign up in any Group they wish via our online tee time system or by asking a member of the Professional Staff.  When signing up for a particular Group, one should note when the first tee time which has been reserved for that group is, and be ready to play at that time.  As a particular Group’s first tee times approaches, the Professional Staff will randomly pair players together and assign order of play.

All Groups are open to all Golf, Limited Golf, and Social Members. Each Group has it’s own personality as well as friendly games.  Members may invite a Guest to play in a Group as well.  It is asked that when a Member wishes to entertain more than one Guest to reserve a non-group tee time.

For more information on our Groups, or if you are interested in forming a new Group, please contact a member of the Professional Staff.

If a Group has not filled their allocated tee times within 24 hours of the first tee time, those unfilled tee times will be released.  The staff at Silver Lake understands that not always does one wish to play in a group.  Regular tee times are made available in and around Group play.

The Handicap Committee establishes, implements and supervises the system for the equitable establishment of golf handicaps of all golf playing members.  Should an acceptable score not be posted for any 18 or 9 hole round, the Handicap Committee may post a score equal to the player’s lowest handicap differential.

A score shall be entered for an uncompleted hole (up to 5 holes for an 18 hole round and 2 holes for a 9 hole round) as par plus any handicap stroke (if applicable) or equal to the highest score permissible via equitable stroke control.

Green Angels

The green angels is a fantastic program to introduce ladies that are new to the game, to instruction, and the etiquette of golf.

Many friendships have been formed through green angels, and is one of the main focuses of the clinic.

The first two sessions are spent on the driving range instilling core fundamentals that will enable our players to get out onto the golf course.

Sessions 3 through 6 are spent on the golf course. We will pair into "new" groups for each session and play a scramble format from 100, 150, and 200 yards.

In our final session, the group will play their own ball from 200 yards, and complete as many holes as possible.

Each clinic is roughly 1.5 hours, and occurs weekly on Tuesday from 6pm- 730.

The 2020 Green Angels will take place on June 9,16, 24, 31, and July 7th and 14th.
A second lesson series may occur in August and September.
