EVENT RECAP

The 2013 Net and Gross Championships were held together this past weekend at Silver Lake Country Club.  54 Players took on Championship conditions as hole locations were toughened and green speeds were up.  Controlling ones approach shot to the greens was key as any ball that came to rest above the hole left the competitor with a slippery putt.  After Day 1, Tim McKinnon held the lead with a 3 under par score of 69.  He followed that wonderful round up with an even par round of 72 which allowed him to finish 2nd in his flight.

But the story of the weekend was of new member, John White.  Mr. White opened with a very respectable round of 74 on Saturday.  On Sunday, he could do no wrong.  He finished out his round with a net 1 on hole 18 by holing out his approach shot from some 80 yards!  That amazing shot not only earned him a skin, but ultimetaly put him in a playoff for the Championship!  

Mr. White took on Pete Oldham who fired scores of 72 and 67.  Mr. Oldham said that his round on Sunday (67) was one of the best rounds he's ever played.  He kept his ball below the hole and never got into any serious trouble.

The playoff started on hole #1 and both players settled for 5 (Mr. White making a 6 for 5) and we continued on to #2.  On #2, both players found tree trouble.  Mr. Oldham played a great recovery back to the fairway leaving him some 140 yards.  He played a great iron shot in, but if came to rest above the hole just off the right side of the green.  Mr. White was lying three (getting a shot) short of the bunkers to the left of the green faced with a very difficult pitch.  The shot he played from there was pure gold.  The ball landed on the green, rolled to just behind the hole, and trickeled down to some 2 feet.  Mr. Oldham played a fantastic putt from above the hole and was able to stop the ball 5 feet below the hole as well as make the come-backer.

That put the ball in Mr. White's court who had 2 feet for a net birdie and the Championship.  The put had a bit if right to left in it which Mr. White judged perfectly.  Both players should be congratulated for the fine play over two days of tough conditions.
